Apple Software Update: JamF Pro

One thing we can say with certainty this year, is that we have seen an increased reliance upon the use of technology to support learning and teaching. Earlier this year, we communicated a planned upgrade of the management software for all Apple devices. We decided to delay the rollout because of the onset of Remote Learning.

Please take a moment to read the information below so that you know what to expect through this process.

We currently use JamF at the College; however, the new version, JamF Pro, allows our IT staff to maintain and configure Apple devices handsfree, improving the College’s COVID Safe practices. The upgraded software also allows increased parental oversight with greater strength and flexibility to management applications. The current links to the College’s WiFi and print management remain unchanged.

Commencing 30 November, students and parents across the College will start to receive email notifications informing them of the timeline for the upgrade for their year level. Our communication will also explain the mechanics of the process.

Who does this affect?
This upgrade is relevant to Apple users only (iPad and laptop) in Years 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11. Current Year 8 students who have purchased an Apple device for 2021 and new Year 5 and 7 students (2021) will have their devices pre-configured. Windows devices are managed differently and are not affected.

What do I have to do?
To prepare for the upgrade, please back your device up. Devices will be returned to factory setting, meaning that all data on the device will be lost.

When is this occurring?
This process commences on 30 November and will be concluded by 2 December.

Why is this occurring?
The upgraded software allows a touch-free configuration and maintenance of devices by our IT staff. The JamF Pro software has more significant levels of oversite of applications and parental control. You can find out about JamF Pro using this link.

There is never an ideal time to undertake upgrades of this nature; we appreciate that it is an inconvenience and potentially disruptive. The College has worked with CT to target the most appropriate time of the year that would prepare us for 2021.
