Go Girl; Go For IT Webinar

Last month, on October 13, two of our Middle School students took part in the inaugural ‘Go Girl – Go For IT…CyberEdition’, a virtual technology conference.

Over 600 young girls from around Australia logged on – either at school or at home – and enjoyed a day full of virtual presentations and workshops. The conference included a virtual careers expo and a wide range of videos and content.

Go Girl, Go For IT is a program run by the Victorian ICT for women network, an industry-driven initiative that aims to support and enable entry, retention and progression for women working in ICT. The idea is to challenge the view that ‘IT’ means coding, and to excite and engage female school students into the world of IT. The conference worked to inspire young women and help them discover the potential careers and future opportunities that exist within IT.

Our two participants, Chloe Evans (Year 6) and Kiana Theodore (Year 7), logged onto the conference via their iPads from the Woodend Campus. Both girls really enjoyed the day, though they commented it would have been great to be able to attend in person…maybe next year!

Reflections from Chloe and Kiana are included below; well done girls on taking part in such a future-thinking conference – and what could be more relevant than to attend virtually!

The Go Girl – CyberEdition was very good… It was really fun to think of all the I.T. opportunities we now know of for our future. I think that it would have been so much better in real life with physical expos and objects to see and try out. Overall, i think it was great.”  – Kiana Theodore (Year 7)

I found the talks very interesting. The speakers taught us about secure passwords and got me interested in a future at IT. Overall, it was a really fun and educating experience.” – Chloe Evans (Year 6)
