Year 10 Work Experience 2018

At the end of last month, 102 Year 10 students participated in Work Experience and Structured Learning Work Placements with employers that varied from animal handling care at Pets Haven in Woodend to cancer research and laboratory work at Peter Mac in Melbourne City. The purpose of these placements is to give students a taste of what a working week in a workplace is like, including elements such as routine, transport, responsibilities, and learning how to work responsibly with other people. Students chose each workplace based on their interests, or on their VET course requirement, with the placement helping them make important decisions about what career directions they may want to take. Many work experiences and structured work placements lead to part time jobs and they can also be very useful when it comes to subject selection. The best outcome though, is  that placement leads to increased confidence and motivation because a student discovers something about their workplace that will motivate them in pursuing their future studies.

This year the most popular workplaces were Primary School placements, Veterinary Clinics, and placement in Law Courts or Offices.

A few example of the wide variety of work placements were:

  • Rohan Nicol who did field work and lab work with the Arthur Rylan Institute in Heidelberg
  • Lulu Newton-Brown (see attachement ) who helped with Tennis Coaching  with Scott Vaughn Tennis Coaching in Macedon
  • Ben Langenburg who completed Drone Training right far out at Warrnambool with VUAS

Our Careers leader, Jack O’Brien, congratulates all students for their great effort in participating in their placements and representing Braemar College in such a positive way to the community. He has received many emails from employers praising their students attitude and behaviour.
