An update from our Army Cadet Unit

2018 has brought with it some great opportunities for the Braemar College Army Cadet Unit. Starting the year with a recruitment of 25 new recruits, the Unit is in great stead for another successful year of fun, adventure, and learning.

This year the Unit welcomes our new Officer Commanding, Major (AAC) Karl Mainka who is filling the role of Captain (AAC) Guy Hall after his 20 years of service to the BMCACU.

Our activities this year started with an action-packed bivouac held on campus at Braemar where the new cadets were introduced to navigation, first aid, radio communication, camouflage and concealment, and living in the field. Our senior cadets continued to improve their skills in teamwork, leadership, survival skills, and communication whilst working to provide an engaging program for their peers. Our programs convey the importance for continuous connection and relations between the senior cadets, and our youngest cadets. I was incredibly proud of the way all of the Braemar Cadets held themselves over the weekend; all willing to learn, wanting to teach, and prepared for adventure.

In April, we also took part in the ANZAC Day ceremonies at both the Mt Macedon Dawn Service and the Woodend Parade and RSL service. As a Unit, we always appreciate the opportunity to be a part of such a moving and important occasion in our nation’s calendar. The cadets had great fun leaning and then presenting their drill skills at the college’s ANZAC Assembly and in Woodend.

We also recently had a number of cadets receive promotions for the 2018 training year. This is part of Braemar’s adjustment to a Unit that is double the size of the previous year, and is an awesome opportunity for more young people to come up and experience the roles of leadership in the AAC. I would also like to congratulate CDTCPL Henry Wilcox who recently was awarded the Commander’s Medallion for Commitment to the Cadet Values; Courage, Initiative, Respect, and Teamwork.

As the Unit’s most senior cadet, I am looking forward to another great year of exciting activities and working with our cadets, as a rising generation under a rising sun.
