Youth Parliamentary Convention at Braemar College

We are so excited to have won the right to host a Youth Parliamentary Convention on our Mount Macedon Campus. Tomorrow we will be welcoming groups of students from five local high schools as they join forces with our young people to discuss and contemplate issues of environmental justice.

The Victorian Students’ Parliamentary Program is an ongoing initiative of the Department of Education and Training. It has a long history of engaging students in parliamentary-style debates about relevant, meaningful topics and connecting students with the democratic process of Parliament.

Our guest speakers for the day are Joanne Duncan and Friends of the Earth Coordinator, Leigh Ewbank. Our College Principal will welcome the students and introduce the Convention, while Joanne and Leigh will address the students to introduce and facilitate further discussion.

Throughout the day, students will be allocated to mixed-school groups to collaborate and discuss potential solutions to our world’s environmental issues. Each group will work together to develop a presentation, which will be shared at the end of the day. The entire group of students will then vote to crown the best presentation. One of the mixed-school student groups will take part in an art project throughout the day; they will be creating a mural.

We are proud to host this event for the first time in an effort to unite the local youth from across our school’s district; this goal is a focus area for 21st Century Education and one that we believe can only have a positive impact on our young people.

We look forward to seeing the outcomes from the day and to meeting the passionate, inspiring young people from our neighbouring schools.
