DUCKumentary Winner – STEAM Fair 2020

This year was the second year that we have conducted the Braemar STEAM Fair; however, sadly, this year we had to get creative and go virtual.

The STEAM Fair, which coincides with Science Week, provides an opportunity for students in Senior School to present a project that demonstrates a topic of interest in any of the STEAM fields – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics. Students could enter the competition with a submission from an individual or in a small group (2-4 participants); they were required to submit a research statement and then demonstrate, prove, or further explore this topic in the form of some kind of visual presentation.

Despite the impact of COVID and having to take the STEAM Fair online, we were so pleased to receive many creative and interesting submissions. It was great to see students pursuing their passions, researching topics that they’d always wondered about, and testing theories across so many fields.

This year’s STEAM Challenge winner was Shaneela Benka, from Year 11. Shaneela submitted a video she created, a ‘duckumentary’, if you will, where she studied and tested the learning behaviours and capacity of ducks. She set the ducks challenges and recorded their responses, pointing our their abilities and also their limitations.

Check out Shaneela’s great video below (or click here), and get to know her three little guinea pigs (ehm…ducks).
